Caroline Shannon is among the seniors who will lead the Jeffs this season
Women's Squash Set for 2006-07 Season
November 7, 2006
The Amherst women’s squash team comes off of a 2005-2006 campaign that saw them struggle early but regain consistency down the stretch. Despite early trouble, including a tough loss to Middlebury (5-4), the Jeffs came together to win two out of their last three regular season matches by downing NESCAC foe Colby College (5-4) and Pioneer Valley neighbor Mount Holyoke College (7-2). Despite a seventh place finish in the NESCAC tournament, the Jeffs found their strength and posted playoff wins over Wesleyan University (8-1) and Franklin and Marshall College (5-4) before falling to William Smith (3-6) in the finals of the Walker Cup division at the Howe Cup National Championships.
Amherst loses three key players in co-captains Lauren Coape-Arnold and Scotty Hanley and senior Margo Nathan. Hanley finished the season with two wins against Wesleyan and Franklin and Marshall opponents at the Howe Cup before falling to William Smith’s Emily Gailun in four games. Coape-Arnold’s and Margo Nathan’s leadership on and off the court, especially maintaining focus on match days, will be tough to replace.
The Jeffs look strong as they return their top five starters, including seniors Caroline Shannon, Abby Mantica, Emily O’Brien and Sarah Harper as well as junior Libby Martin. Juniors Di Kirkwood and Heather Nowak will bring experience to the top nine this season and the ladder will determine who steps in to fill the graduated spots.
Hannah Merves is the only first-year joining the team, but she is expected to immediately make an impact on the team's success.
