COACH TOM CARMEAN
Coach Tom Carmean enters his second season with the women's program after five years as assistant coach in the men's program. The head lacrosse coach, his move from co-head coach to the top slot on the sidelines paid immediate dividends in 2001, as a reborn men's lacrosse program jumped out to an impressive 5-1 start, followed by a 9-7 campaign in 2002, a 10-5 mark in 2003, an 11-5 season in 2004 and an 11-4 slate in 2005, showing signs that a future in the NESCAC's upper echelon is immanent. Carmean - a three-time All-America at the University of Massachusetts and veteran of 11 seasons in professional lacrosse - draws from a wealth of experience in the college and pro game. During a standout collegiate playing career, he was recognized as one of the top attackmen in the nation, twice leading the Minutemen to the NCAA Quarterfinals before graduating with a degree in English in 1988. From there, he tutored his former UMass teammates as a graduate assistant coach, earning a master's degree in education in 1992. In 10 seasons of pro indoor lacrosse, Carmean was a five-time All-League selection and led the Major Indoor Lacrosse League's Boston Blazers to a trio of appearances in the League Championship Series. He also suited up for the M.I.L.L.'s New York Saints and Rochester Nighthawks, and played with the Bridgeport Barrage, an outdoor professional team, in 2003. Along the way, the Ithaca, N.Y., native coached three seasons at nearby South Hadley High School before accepting an assistant coaching position at Amherst in 1999.
