Amherst Wins NESCAC Tournament Opener Over Tufts

AMHERST, MA – The Amherst College women’s squash team won their NESCAC Tournament opener this evening when they blanked the 9th-seeded Tufts University squad. The win moves Amherst one round further into the conference tournament, and improves its season record to 6-8.
Amherst played one of its finest matches of the season, taking the head-to-head meeting over the Jumbos 9-0. Only Amherst’s top player, senior co-captain Caroline Shannon (Hanover, NH) needed a fourth game to take her match, as she topped Victoria Barba 3-1 (6-9, 9-6, 9-1, 9-4) after falling behind 1-0.
Senior co-captain Emily O’Brien (New Canaan, CT) took a very close fought match over Stefanie Mark 9-5, 9-5, 10-8, while Libby Martin (St. Louis, MO) and Abby Mantica (Sewickley, PA) each won their fifth straight match.
In the six and seven spots, Amherst’s Di Kirkwood (Bedford Corners, NY) and Melissa Moulton (Oreland, PA) each took their matches 3-0 while surrendering only a single point.
Amherst advances to face top seed and host Trinity College tomorrow morning at 8 a.m.
