AMHERST, MA – The Amherst College women’s squash team hosted day one of the Amherst Invitational, taking on Middlebury College at 4 p.m. and Colby College at 7 p.m. The Jeffs dropped their first match to the Panthers, 6-3, but came back to defeat Colby 7-2 in the nightcap to snap their four-match losing skid. Amherst moves to 4-7 on the season.

In the first match of the day, Amherst nearly pulled off the upset over 14th-ranked Middlebury, as two of the Jeffs who dropped their respective matches took their opponents to a fifth game. After being blown out 9-0 in her first game, junior Di Kirkwood (Bedford Corner, NY) stormed back to win the next two games and take a 2-1 lead. The fourth game was a hard-fought battle that required 10 points for the win, but Kirkwood was unable to hang on for the win, as she fell 10-9 before dropping the final game, 9-3.

Sophomore Melissa Moulton (Oreland, PA) also took her match to five games, as she was unable to finish off her opponent after pulling ahead two games to none. Moulton dropped the third game 9-6 and lost a close fourth game, 10-8, before being blanked in the fifth game, 9-0.

Amherst put a stop to its losing skid by upsetting 12th-ranked Colby, 7-2. The Jeffs took care of the White Mules in relatively easy fashion, as four of the Amherst players needed only three games to finish off their respective opponents. Junior Libby Martin (St. Louis, MO) put in the most exciting match of the evening, as she pulled off the 3-2 victory after being down 2-0. Martin hung with Colby’s Jessica Vogel in the third game to stay alive with a 10-8 win, but made easy work of her opponent in the fourth and fifth games, winning 9-2 and 9-0, respectively.

Amherst returns to action Saturday to conclude the Amherst Invitational. The Jeffs will take on Wellesley College at 12:30 p.m. and William Smith College at 2 p.m.
