Amherst Splits at Yale InvitationalJanuary 13, 2007 By Justin Long NEW HAVEN, CT – The Amherst College women’s squash team played a pair of matches at the Yale University Invitational, defeating Conn. College 7-2 before falling to Bowdoin College 7-2. The Lord Jeffs move to 3-4 on the season and resume play Jan. 17 at Dartmouth College. Seniors Abby Mantica (Sewickley, PA) and Emily O'Brien (New Canaan, CT) were the only Amherst players to pick up wins in both matches, as the eleventh-ranked Polar Bears of Bowdoin College proved to be too much for the Lord Jeffs. O'Brien dropped her first game in the Bowdoin match, but came back to take a 2-1 lead. After being notched at 2-2, O'Brien convincingly took the final game (9-2) for the match. Mantica also had to come back in her second match of the day after finding herself trailing two games to one. The senior ws able to take consecutive hard-fought games from Bowdoin's Jackie Deysher, including a thrilling final game that forced Mantica to put up 10 points to earn the victory.
