From a NESCAC Release
May 9, 2007
AMHERST, MA – Amherst College seniors Alyssa Briody (Hopewell, NJ) and Emery Sweeney (Darien, CT) and sophomore sensation Amy Craig (Denver, CO) were each named to a 2007 NESCAC All-Conference Team this afternoon. Briody, Amherst’s 2007 leading scorer, was named to the First Team for the second consecutive year, while Craig and Sweeney grabbed their first All-Conference honors with Second Team nods.
Briody, a 2006 Second Team All-America selection, will graduate this spring with a degree in History. She has been an excellent student while at Amherst, and has been nominated for NESCAC All-Academic honors for the second straight year. Briody led the Amherst attack all season with her ability to score and set up her teammates. After starting all 16 games for the Lord Jeffs this spring, she finishes with an impressive 19 goals and 47 assists for 66 points. Briody leaves Amherst with an amazing 203 career points, and one of few to ever reach the 200-point mark.
After scoring an impressive 37 goals as a first-year, Craig surpassed expectations with 53 goals and a trio of assists for 56 points this spring. Craig was often the recipient of a beautiful feed from Briody (23 times), and scored five game-winning goals this season. While being named to the Second Team this spring, Craig had 10 more goals than the next highest goal-scorer in the NESCAC.
Although Sweeney did not contribute goals or assists to the Amherst offense, she did anchor one of the conference’s best defenses, as the Jeffs allowed just 8.31 goals per game, the third best goals-against average in the NESECAC. Sweeney finished second on her team in ground balls this season (35) and fourth in caused turnovers (18).
