Jeffs Edged by Bowdoin, 11-10

April 21, 2007

BRUNSWICK, ME – The Amherst College women’s lacrosse team picked up its second conference loss of the season, dropping a very tight game to Bowdoin College, 11-10. The Lord Jeffs move to 8-4 (5-2 NESCAC) with only two games remaining in the regular season, both of which are against NESCAC opponents.

The Lord Jeffs found themselves trailing 4-0 after the first 14 minutes of action, but senior quad-captain Alyssa Briody (Hopewell, NJ) put Amherst on the board with a goal before assisting sophomore Amy Craig (Denver, CO) to make it a 4-2 game.

Bowdoin headed into halftime with a 6-2 lead and made it 7-2 just 20 seconds into the second frame. Sophomore Mary Noonan (West Roxbury, MA) netted the next two goals of the game, both of which were assisted by Briody.

Craig converted on a free-position shot and followed up with her third goal of the afternoon to make it a 9-6 game, and Briody scored her second goal with 8:30 remaining to cut her team’s deficit to two goals. The Jeffs and Polar Bears traded goals until Bowdoin held an 11-8 advantage, when senior Liz Wise (Scarsdale, NY) scored twice to make it a one-goal game.

Amherst’s comeback fell just short, as Bowdoin held on for the 11-10 win. Junior goalie Linda McEvoy (Rochester, NY) kept Amherst in the game by making 11 saves in the first half, but the Polar Bear offense was simply too much.

The Lord Jeffs return to action Tuesday for a NESCAC match-up with Tufts University at 4:30 p.m.
