AMHERST, MA –The 6th-ranked Amherst College women's lacrosse team rebounded from back-to-back losses with an impressive 13-6 win at home over 8th-ranked Williams College. The Jeffs scored five unanswered goals mid-game to take a commanding lead, which would never be in question.
After a one-goal loss to Babson mid-week, the Lord Jeffs looked to bounce back from consecutive regular season losses for the first time since the 1999 season. The two NESCAC and Little Three archrivals stayed tight for the first 20 minutes, trading goals until two straight goals from junior Maddie Hoeg (Shoreham, NY) gave Amherst a 4-2 lead.
Williams seemingly stole back momentum with just 1:18 showing on the first half clock when Kaylan Tildsley set-up Meighan McGowan for the Ephs third goal of the game. Amherst responded by winning the ensuing draw, and then scored :02 seconds before the half on an wild goal from sophomore Amy Craig (Denver, CO). Craig took a high feed from behind the net on the crease and batted the ball on a jump shot it into the net.
The late goal from Craig sparked the Amherst offense, as the Jeffs rolled out of halftime to the tune of four more unanswered goals in the next ten minutes, swelling the lead to 9-3. The Ephs would not go away easily, and put together a three-goal run of their own to close the gap to just three goals.
Amherst would re-gain composure, and close out the game with four straight scores, with senior quad-captain Alyssa Briody (Hopewell, NJ) scoring two and assisting on another during the spurt. She finished the day with a game-high 6 points on 2 goals and 4 assists.
Craig led Amherst in goal scoring with a quartet of tallies, while Hoeg netted a hat-trick. McGowan was the onll Eph to tally a pair of goals on the day. Amherst junior goalie Linda McEvoy (Rochester, NY) made 11 saves in net for Amherst, while Abby Taylor made 13 stops for the Ephs.
Amherst improves to 7-3 overall, but more importantly 5-1 in the conference, and capture the 2007 Little Thee outright title. The Jeffs return to action on Wednesday, April 18 for a 4:30 p.m. game at Wheaton College.BOX SCORE
