Amherst Hangs on for 10-9 Win Over Colorado
March 21, 2007
COLORADO SPRINGS, CO – The Amherst College women’s lacrosse team watched its five-goal halftime lead over Colorado College quickly disappear in the second half, but managed to hold on for the 10-9 victory to conclude its spring break road trip. The Lord Jeffs return to action Saturday, Mar. 24 for a match-up with Bates College.
The first goal of the game came after eight minutes of action, when Colorado’s Robin Harvey scored on a free-position shot. Amherst sophomore Amy Craig (Denver, CO) responded three minutes later with an unassisted goal, but the Tigers regained the lead when Mallory Newton finished off a Kerry O’Shaughnessy assist just 28 seconds later.
Beginning at the 13:58 mark, Amherst scored six unanswered goals to close out the half, a span that included a pair of goals each from Craig, sophomore Mary Noonan (West Roxbury, MA) and junior Maddie Hoeg (Shoreham, NY). The Jeffs’ final goal of the half came with just two seconds on the clock, as Noonan got herself an open look and found the back of the net just before the horn sounded.
Harvey netted her second goal after just 2:45 of the second half, but Amherst got right back to work, as senior Liz Wise (Scarsdale, NY) put the Jeffs back ahead by five goals at the 25:32 mark before Craig scored her fourth goal of the game five minutes later, giving Amherst a 9-3 lead with 20 minutes remaining in regulation.
The Tigers strung together five goals in less than five minutes, with Craig’s fifth goal sandwiched in between. Kate Fitzgerald netted her third goal of the game with 8:09 left to play to cut the deficit to one, but neither team put another tally on the scoreboard, as the Jeffs forced a turnover with one minute remaining in the game and were able to run out the clock and hang on for the 10-9 win.
Craig’s five goals led the Amherst attack, with her fifth proving to be the game-winner. Harvey and Fitzgerald led the Tigers with three goals apiece. Linda McEvoy (Rochester, NY) made nine saves for Amherst to pick up the win, while Jess Van Doren stopped eight shots in the loss.
