Amherst Women's Hockey Assistants
A native of Burnsville, Minnesota, assistant coach Melanie Ruzzi enters her second year at Amherst after serving as a coach in the Massachusetts Spitfires youth hockey organization. A 2003 graduate of Providence College, Ruzzi played four years as a defenseman, helping lead the Friars to an ECAC East Championship in 2002 and a Hockey East Regular Season Championship and Hockey East Tournament Championship in 2003. Ruzzi is currently working toward a master's degree in sport management at UMass Amherst.
Julia Ortenzio joins the Amherst coaching staff this season after spending last season playing and coaching in a women’s professional hockey league in Switzerland. A native of Eden Prairie, Minnesota, Ortenzio is a 2003 graduate of the University of Wisconsin, where she played for four years (and was part of the very first varsity team). Since her graduation, Ortenzio has served as a coach with the Madison (Wisconsin) Capitols girls hockey association and also founded Hockey Basix camps and clinics in Madison for men and women. Ortenzio is currently pursuing a Masters Degree in Sport Management at the University of Massachusetts.
