Amherst Rolls to 3-0 Win at Wesleyan in First of Two Games

From a Wesleyan Release
AMHERST, MA - The Amherst College women’s hockey team ousted Little Three rival Wesleyan University this evening, 3-0 in what is the first of two games with the Cardinals in two days.
First-year forward Kate Dennett scored her team-leading third goal of the season at 5:05 of the second period to break a scoreless tie and Amherst (2-1-0, 2-1-0) added a pair of power-play goals to pad the lead en route to a 3-0 victory over Wesleyan (1-2-0, 1-2-0). The squads will square off again tomorrow in Middletown to complete the weekend NESCAC and Little Three series.
Dennett knocked in a rebound right in front of the Wesleyan net after first-year Michelle McGann came in from around the net on the right side to force Wesleyan sophomore goalie Rachel Stemerman to make the initial stop. Sophomore Tarasai Karega also had an assist on the play and she finished with three helpers as she contributed to both Amherst man-up goals. She leads Amherst with five assists this year.
In the final period of action, McGann got the first goal of her career with a backhander from the right circle that sailed into the upper right corner of the cage at 15:09, one second before a Wesleyan penalty expired. Twice during the same power play, Wesleyan had two short-handed breakaway chances, one by junior Adrienne Shea which was stopped by senior goalie Lindsay Grabowski, and another by sophomore Hannah Jackson which was defensed well by an Amherst back check, forcing Jackson to alter her route and make the save by Grabowski easier. Grabowski finished the game with 13 saves, while Stemerman had 25 for Wesleyan.
