Amherst Falls in Shoot-Out with Ninth-Ranked Bowdoin, 8-5
November 18, 2006
AMHERST, MA - The Amherst College women’s hockey team dropped a high-scoring affair on Saturday afternoon against visiting 9th ranked Bowdoin College 8-5. With the loss the Jeffs fall to 1-1 on the season (1-1 NESCAC) while the Polar Bears improve to 2-0 overall and 2-0 in conference play.
The Jeffs got on the board early in the game when Meg Dickoff (Minnetonka, MN) pounded home a loose puck on the power-play. Bowdoin leveled the score at the mid-way point of the first period when sophomore forward Beth Battin slid one home.
The second period saw the Bears score three unanswered goals by senior forward Meghan Gillis, junior defenseman Katie Coyne and sophomore forward Scooter Walsh to give Bowdoin a 4-1 advantage. The Jeffs grabbed one back with three minutes to play in the stanza when sophomore winger Lindsey Harrington (Westford, MA) took passes from senior tri-captain Tes Siarnecki (Gardener, MA) and sophomore forward Anna MaClean (Edina, MN) before unloading a rocket past the Bowdoin goalie.
Bowdoin notched a score just 29 seconds into the third frame when junior defenseman Kristen Cameron fired one into the Amherst net. Amherst answered back just 13 seconds later as MacLean netted her first tally of the season on Harrington’s second assist of the contest. The Jeffs pulled within a goal with 12 minutes to play when Siarnecki scored on the power-play, but that would be as close as they would get. Two goals in two minutes from Cameron and senior forward Meghan Gillis helped the Polar Bears pull away. Rookie forward Kate Dennet (Highland Ranch, CO) grabbed her first career goal with six minutes to play but the bears added an empty netter to seal the Jeffs’ fate.
Amherst returns to action next Saturday when they travel to meet Little Three rival Wesleyan University at 4 p.m.
