Jeffs Conclude Texas Road Trip with 58-39 Victory Over MIT

December 29, 2006

SOUTH PADRE ISLAND, TX – The Amherst College women’s basketball team concluded its Texas road trip by defeating the Massachusetts Institute of Technology 58-39 in day two of the South Padre Island Shootout in Texas.

Amherst and MIT were notched at 18-18 with just under seven minutes remaining in the first half, when the Jeffs went on a 16-4 tear to take a 34-22 lead into halftime. The run was sparked by a pair of three-pointers from sophomore Kerry O’Loughlin (Stow, MA) and some dominant play on the post by first-year Samantha Swensen (Rockaway Park, NY) and junior tri-captain Stefanie Reiff (Hinsdale, IL).

Amherst opened up the second half by going on a 6-0 run to increase its lead to 40-22 and never looked back, leading by as many as 20 points in the game.

The Lord Jeffs put in a well-balanced team performance, with 10 of 11 Amherst players contributing to the scoring and 10 seeing at least 12 minutes of action. Reiff led Amherst in scoring, finishing with 12 points and six rebounds. Swensen added eight points, two steals and two blocks, while leading her team in rebounds with seven.

Sharon Prange led all scorers, finishing with 19 points and five rebounds for the Engineers.

Junior point guard Shaina Pollack (Great Neck, NY) was one of five players named to the All-Tournament Team. Pollack totaled 20 points, six rebounds, six assists and four steals in Amherst's two games.

Through the first 11 games of the season, this very young Amherst team sits three games ahead of last season’s pace at 7-4, and hopes to carry its momentum into the upcoming stretch of conference play.

The Lord Jeffs return to action Jan. 6 for a non-conference match-up with Little Three rival Williams College in Williamstown, Mass. Tip-off is set for 2 p.m.
