SOUTH PADRE ISLAND, TX – The Amherst College women’s basketball team put its five-game winning streak on the line against Denison University at the South Padre Island Convention Center in Texas, taking on the Big Red in day one of the South Padre Island Shootout. The Lord Jeffs trailed by just three points at halftime, but Denison outlasted Amherst in the second half to pull off the 60-47 victory.
The two teams battled for the first 12 minutes of the game, but the very talented Big Red began to pull away late in the half, holding a 25-16 advantage with just two minutes remaining. The Jeffs were able to cut their deficit to three points with a Stefanie Reiff (Hinsdale, IL) three-point play and a Kerry O'Loughlin (Stow, MA) three-pointer, as Amherst headed into the locker room down 25-22.
Denison opened up the second frame on fire, hitting five three-pointers in five minutes, but Amherst never let the game get out of hand. With the deficit hovering around ten points for most of the second half, Amherst was forced to foul with time winding down, allowing the Big Red to expand their lead to 13 points by game’s end.
Junior point guard Shaina Pollack (Great Neck, NY) led Amherst with 13 points, while Reiff chipped in nine points and five rebounds. Carolyn Simpson picked up a double-double for the Big Red, finishing with 14 points and 10 boards.
