SPRINGFIELD, MA – The Amherst College women’s basketball team edged out the Springfield College Pride 57-55 in day one of the Pioneer Valley Classic to improve to 2-3 on the season, dropping Springfield to 3-2.

Amherst trailed 29-27 at halftime and followed with another back-and-forth battle in the second half. The Lord Jeffs trailed by six points with seven minutes remaining in regulation but were able to storm back within striking distance, trailing by only one point with 15 seonds remaining.

Amherst took control and gave the ball to sophomore Kerry O’Loughlin (Stow, MA), who fired up a three-pointer with only six seconds remaining in regulation. The Jeffs took the 57-55 lead with the make, leaving the Pride with nothing more than a desperation three-pointer that missed the rim, giving Amherst the victory in come-from-behind fashion.

O’Loughlin scored 16 points to lead the Jeffs, adding eight rebounds and a pair of blocks. Junior Stefanie Reiff (Hinsdale, IL) played a solid all-around game, racking up 13 points, five rebounds, four assists and a block.

The Pride were led by junior Tara McCarthy (Bristol, RI), who totaled 19 points on 7-of-14 shooting, including four-of-seven from behind the three-point line. Sophomores Corey Finch (Hanover, PA) and Lauren O’Connor (Valhalla, NY) were dominant in the paint, pulling down 17 and 15 rebounds, respectively, while adding nine points each.

The Pioneer Valley Classic continues Saturday, with Amherst taking on Western New England College at 1 p.m. and Springfield taking on Westfield State College at 3 p.m.
