Jeffs Open Season with Amherst Classic for Good Cause

November 13, 2006

AMHERST, MA - The Amherst women’s basketball team kicks off its season this weekend as the host of the Amherst Invitational, which pits the Jeffs against non-conference foes UMASS-Dartmouth and Piedmont College.

Amherst hopes to get off to a fast start as they prepare for a challenging upcoming NESCAC slate, but this invitational is about more than basketball as the Jeffs are rallying behind the Basketball for Books Literacy Campaign.

The Jeffs encourage fans to come watch their first two contests in support of their Basketball for Books Literacy Campaign. Jeff supporters are asked to donate one book (or more) as the price of admission to help bring more books to the Springfield and Holyoke areas.

The competition for the Invitational should provide exciting basketball for the entire weekend. The Jeffs head into the Amherst Invitational coming off a 10-15 2005-2006 campaign. This year’s squad is young and talented, and with the emergence of a solid core of returnees, Amherst should be much more competitive this season. UMASS-Dartmouth travels to Amherst after a 10-16 2005-06 season coming out of the Little East Conference. The Piedmont College Lions hail from Habersham County, Georgia and have won 20 or more games in each of the last four seasons.

The Lord Jeffs look forward to a great turn-out again this season for all four of the contests of the Amherst Classic. The full tournament schedule is listed below.
