AMHERST, MA – The Amherst College women’s basketball team led visiting Colby College by just four points at halftime, but dominated the second half to pick up an 80-57 victory and move to 12-8 (3-2 NESCAC) on the season. Colby drops to 5-12 (1-4 NESCAC) with the loss.

The first half featured eight lead changes and five ties, as neither the Jeffs nor White Mules were able to go on any scoring sprees. Amherst took the half’s largest lead when it went on a 6-0 run to pull ahead 35-30 with 2:54 remaining, but Colby scored the next four points to cut its deficit to one. Junior tri-captain Shaina Pollack (Great Neck, NY) knocked down a three-pointer with 30 seconds left on the clock, giving Amherst a 38-34 lead heading into the locker room.

Amherst opened the second half on a 15-4 run highlighted by eight points from senior tri-captain Jenny Muller (Andover, MA), as the Jeffs jumped out to a 53-38 lead with 13 minutes remaining in regulation. Amherst’s lead did not dip below 10 points the rest of the way, and grew to 23 points three times late in the game, as the Jeffs finished with an impressive 80-57 win, their fifth in the last six games.

Muller finished with a game-high 21 points on 64% shooting (9-for-14), adding five assists, four rebounds and a career-high seven steals. Sophomore Kerry O’Loughlin (Stow, MA) chipped in 14 points in the second half to finish with 19 on the night, while Pollack added 11 points and junior tri-captain Stefanie Reiff (Hinsdale, IL) added 14 points and four steals.

The Jeffs had everything working all night, as their offense featured an impressive 50% field goal percentage in the first half and 63% in the second half, while their defense held Colby to just 39% on the night, including a mere 24% in the second half.

A trio of Colby women finished in double figures, with first-year Alison Cappelloni chipping in 17 points to lead the way, adding five rebounds. Sophomore Lauren Duval and junior Katie McCabe added 14 points and 10 points, respectively, also adding five rebounds each.

The Lord Jeffs return to action Saturday for a NESCAC match-up with Bowdoin College at LeFrak Gymnasium. Game time is set for 3 p.m.
