Amherst Earns Road Win at Westfield State College

January 23, 2007

From a Westfield State Release

WESTFIELD, MA – The Amherst College women’s basketball team picked up a much needed road win this evening at Westfield State College. After dropping a heartbreaker to archrival Williams College last weekend, the Lord Jeffs have resumed their winning ways, and improved to 11-8 on the season. More importantly, the young Jeffs have passed the number of wins from last year’s squad, and at three games above .500 match their highest mark of the season in that measure.

The Jeffs jumped out to an 8-0 lead in the opening five minutes and led at halftime, 30-19. Junior forward Stefanie Reiff (Hinsdale, IL) scored a game-high 14 points to lead the Jeffs.

Amherst went on a 14-4 run to take its biggest lead of the game, 50-27, with 10:15 remaining. Westfield would not fold, however, as they outscored Amherst by 13 points in the final 10 minutes as both teams substituted freely.

Also scoring in double figures for Amherst was first-year center Samantha Swensen (Rockaway Park, NY) with 10 points.  The double-digit output marks the sixth straight game the first-year player has topped the 10-point plateau.

Ten of 11 players scored for the Lord Jeffs and all 10 players scored for the Owls, as sophomore forward Andrea Wasuk (Lenox, MA) led Westfield with team highs of 12 points and seven rebounds.

Most of the statistics were fairly even with two exceptions: Westfield committed 20 turnovers and was out-rebounded on the offensive boards, 16-6.

Amherst closed out the game at Westfield 62-52, in what was truly a team win, as both starters and reserves played significant roles. The play that Amherst got from its bench tonight will be much needed down the stretch of the conference season and in the year-end tournament.

The win should be a great confidence booster heading into another tough NESCAC weekend ahead, as the Lord Jeffs will return to action this Friday, Jan. 26th when they host Colby College at 7 p.m.
