MIDDLEBURY, VT – The Middlebury College softball team scored two runs in the fifth inning to earn a 3-2 win over Amherst College in a NESCAC West league game. The teams return to the diamond Saturday for a doubleheader at Middlebury beginning at noon.
Amherst took a 2-0 lead with a run in each of the first two innings. Senior tri-captain Annalise Rodli (La Canada, CA) led off the game with a single and was bunted to second before scoring on a single to center by junior Elizabeth Neckes (Dover, MA). In the second inning, sophomore Julia Cummings (Los Angeles, CA) singled up the middle and moved to second on a sacrifice bunt. She later scored on a double to left by sophomore Emily Bularzik (Braintree, MA).
Middlebury got on the board in the bottom of the second as Ellen Sargent doubled to left and later scored on a double to center by Colleen Sullivan. The game-winning rally started with two outs in the fifth, when Katelyn Cannella singled to right before stealing second base. She scored on a triple to center by Amelia Magistrali to tie the game at 2-2. Maura Casey then drove in Magistrali with a single to center to make it a 3-2 contest.
Jennifer Williams got out of a bases-loaded jam in the sixth and retired the side in the seventh to earn the win. She allowed two runs on seven hits, while striking out four.
Magistrali was the lone Panther with a multiple-hit day, owning a single and a double.
Junior Samantha Miller (Newton, MA) took the loss for Amherst, throwing 4.2 innings and allowing all three runs. Cummings had two hits on the afternoon to lead the Amherst offense.
