Amherst Rebounds to Take Nightcap from Smith, 5-4

From a Smith College Release

April 18, 2007

NORTHAMPTON, MA – The Amherst College softball team split a non-conference doubleheader against Smith College this evening in the latest rendition of the “Battle of the Bridge.” The Pioneers took the opening game of the evening 10-0 in just five innings, while Amherst took the nightcap 5-4 on four runs in the sixth.

Amherst sent first-year hurler Alex Chang-Graham (San Carlos, CA) to the mound to open the day, but the youngster had her toughest outing of the season, as she surrendered 9 earned runs on 11 hits. Sophomore Maddie Tamagni (Salinas, CA) made the first of her two relief appearances to finish the fourth inning of game one.

Smith jumped out to a 6-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning and would tack on four more insurance runs in the fifth to close out the game.

In the nightcap, Amherst found itself down 3-0 after two innings, but refused to let the second installation of the rivalry get away. The Lord Jeffs grabbed their first run of the night on an RBI single from junior Ralina Shaw (Tumwater, WA) in the top of the third.

Amherst trailed 4-1 in the sixth, and with just 6 outs separating the Lord Jeffs and a pair of loses, the squad dug in. The Jeffs put together an impressive six-hit rally, scoring four runs in the top of the frame to take a 5-4 lead. Tamagni held the Pioneers off the board in the sixth and seventh innings to help Amherst steal the second game.

The 5-6-7 batters for Amherst came alive in the nightcap as Anne Kelly (Littleton, CO), Shaw and Holly Trace (Northport, AL) each went 2-for-4 in the win.

Amherst returns to action this weekend for a three-game series at Middlebury, with play kicking off Friday night at 5 p.m.
