Amherst Bats Silenced by Westfield State; Jeffs Fall to 8-12 with 5-2 Loss
April 13, 2007
AMHERST, MA –The Amherst College softball team dropped to 8-12 on the season after falling to non-conference Westfield State this afternoon 5-2 at Hill Field. Amherst will stay out of the NESCAC this weekend facing Brandeis University in a doubleheader tomorrow at home.
After two full innings of action, Amherst pitcher Maddie Tamagni (Salinas, CA) and Casey Riddell of Westfield had given up a combined one hit and no runs. In the top of the third frame, the Owls struck first as Mary Cunningham drove home Lindsay Jardin with a two-out double after Jardin reached on a walk.
Amherst responded with a pair of runs in the bottom of the third with first-year sensation Jackie Tyler (Ridgewood, NJ) leading the charge. Tyler picked up an infield single and soon found herself on third base after a steal and passed ball. Senior co-captain Annalise Rodli (La Canada, CA) brought Tyler home on a single through the left side of the infield, before junior Ralina Shaw (Tumwater, WA) ripped an RBI-double to right field.
Amherst would fail to score any more runs after the third inning, with Owls hurler Chelsea Sylvia pitching four innings of scoreless relief for Westfield, giving up just a pair of hits. The Westfield offense gave Sylvia some run support in the late innings, plating one run in the fifth, two in the sixth and one more in the seventh.
Junior Mary Cunningham led the Owls’ offense by going 3-for-3 with a walk, two RBIs and a run scored. Jackie Mason, Katie Gorman and Sam Prouty each added two hits for Westfield. Tyler was the only Jeff with multiple hits on the day (2-for-4). Sylvia moves to 6-3 with the win, while Tamagni drops to 1-2 with the loss.
