Jeffs Drop Little Three Match-Up at Wesleyan for First Conference Loss

From a Wesleyan Release

April 6, 2007

MIDDLETOWN, CT - The Amherst College softball team dropped a Little Three match-up at Wesleyan University this afternoon, 7-4. The loss moves Amherst to 3-1 in NESCAC play, and 6-9 overall. First-year pitcher Alex Chang-Graham (San Carlos, CA) pitched well into the sixth inning before the Cardinals offense took over.

The battle of the two Little Three and NESCAC West rivals began as a pitchers' duel as Chang-Graham helped Amherst to a 1-0 lead into the fifth inning. Amherst grabbed the first run of the game in the first inning when Emily Neil (Kentfield, CA) knocked in Jackie Tyler (Ridgewood, NJ) who stood at third after a lead-off triple.

In the bottom of the fifth, Wesleyan finally got to the young Amherst hurler, posting 5 runs in the bottom of the frame, and then 2 more runs in the sixth. Amherst battled back in its last trip to the plate, but could come up with only a trio of runs, cutting the lead to 7-4.

Tyler, the reigning NESCAC Player of the Week, led the Amherst offense once again today, going 2-for-3 at the plate, with 2 RBIs and 2 runs-scored.

The loss is the third in a row for Amherst, and the Jeffs will hope to turn it around tomorrow when they face Wesleyan for more NESCAC West play. Amherst returns to action tomorrow at 1 p.m. when the Jeffs host the Cardinals for a doubleheader at Hill Field.
