ORANGE COUNTY, CA – The Amherst College softball team fell at the hands of NESCAC foe Tufts University this afternoon at the Sun West Tournament in Orange County, CA. The Jumbos took a 15-2 win over the Lord Jeffs, effectively dropping Amherst to 3-6 on the season.

A high-powered Jumbo offensive was too much for the Lord Jeff pitching staff in this match-up, as Tufts scored four runs in the bottom of the first, and then tacked on three more in the second for a commanding lead. Amherst was held scoreless for four innings by Tufts starter, Lauren Gelmetti. The hurler gave up only four hits, with no earned runs and struck out a pair, before handing the ball over to Katherine Sulivan.

Amherst had better success against the first-year reliever, knocking home a pair of runs in the top of the fifth frame. Junior Elizabeth Neckes (Dover, MA) registered the lone RBI for Amherst, while Jacqueline Tyler (Ridgewood, NJ) went 2-for-3 on the day. It was too little, too late, as Amherst ultimately fell 15-2.

The softball team wraps up its California swing with the loss, and will return home for a few days of much-needed rest before heading to play at WPI on Wednesday, March 28 at 4:00 p.m.
