ORANGE COUNTY, CA – The Amherst College softball team dropped a pair of close games Wednesday morning in Orange County, falling to UW-Eau Claire 8-6 in the first game and to Elmhurst College 3-2 in the second. The Lord Jeffs return to action Thursday for an 8:30 (PT) rematch with Elmhurst, and will finish the day with a 5:45 game against Babson College.

Amherst headed into the seventh inning trailing 6-2, but Wisconsin was able to chalk up a pair of insurance runs that proved to be necessary. With two outs in the bottom half of the frame, senior co-captain Annalise Rodli (La Canada, CA) singled to center to start an Amherst rally. First-year Jacqueline Tyler (Ridgewood, NJ), sophomore Alexa Princi (London, England), junior Elizabeth Neckes (Dover, MA) and first-year Emily Neill (Kentfield, CT) followed with singles of their own to cut the Jeffs’ deficit to two, but Eau Claire switched pitchers and ended the rally to hold on for the 8-6 win.

Tyler led the Amherst offense by going 3-for-4 with a solo homerun, while Neill went 2-for-4 with a pair of RBIs. First-year Alexandra Chang-Graham (San Carlos, CA) and junior Samantha Miller (Newton, MA) shared duties on the mound, with Graham picking up five strikeouts in four innings and Miller allowing just four hits in three innings of work.

Graham returned to action in the nightcap and pitched six solid innings, but the Jeffs once again fell just short of victory. Amherst held a 2-1 lead after five innings, but Elmhurst plated a pair of runs in the bottom of the sixth and held on for the 3-2 win. Neckes went 2-for-3, while Tyler, Rodli and senior co-captain Caroline Polales (Winnetka, IL) added one hit apiece. Graham allowed only six hits, striking out five and walking none.
