Amherst Rebounds from Tuesday Morning Loss to Pick up Extra-Inning Win in Nightcap

March 21, 2007

ORANGE COUNTY, CA – The Amherst College softball team continued its play in the Sun West Tournament in Orange County, CA with a pair of games on Tuesday. The Lord Jeffs fell to Dana College, 9-1, in the early game, but rebounded to topple The College of St. Catherine, 8-7, in eight innings. Amherst moves to 2-2 on the young season, and will resume play Wednesday for a pair of make-up games.

The Jeffs were out-hit 10-3 in the early game, with Senior co-captain Annalise Rodli (La Canada, CA), junior Elizabeth Neckes (Dover, MA) and sophomore Julia Cummings (Los Angeles, CA) each picking up singles in the 9-1 loss.

Amherst’s offense woke up for the second game, as the Jeffs totaled 11 hits and stormed back from a 5-0 deficit after three innings to take a 6-5 lead into the seventh frame. St. Catherine manufactured a run in the top half of the inning to notch the score at 6-6, but Amherst was unable to do any damage at the plate, sending the game into extra innings.

Amherst first-year Alexandra Chang-Graham picked up a pair of strikeouts in the top half of the eighth, but not before St. Catherine scored the go-ahead run on an RBI single. After senior co-captain Caroline Polales (Winnetka, IL) scored the game-tying run on a fielder’s choice in the bottom of the inning, Cummings singled to center field to drive in sophomore Alexa Princi (London, England) for the game-winning run.

In the second game, Cummings, Polales, Rodli and first-year Emily Neill (Kentfield, CT) each had a pair of hits and combined for six RBIs, with Polales and Neill each belting a homerun.

The Jeffs will take on the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire Wednesday morning at 8:30 (PT) and will follow up with a 10:45 game against Elmhurst College.
