Jeffs Give Powerhouse Middlebury Tough Match

April 21, 2007

AMHERST, MA – The Amherst College men’s tennis team gave national powerhouse Middlebury College a good match, but the Lord Jeffs could not pull off the upset, as the visiting Panthers took home the 6-3 victory. Sophomore Zack Lerner (Scarsdale, NY) picked up the biggest win on the day for Amherst, upsetting the third-ranked player in the nation, 6-1, 7-6 (5) in the top singles spot.

Junior Jeff Wan (Staten Island, NY) and senior Karti Subramanian (Bethesda, MD) also picked up singles victories for Amherst, as the Lord Jeffs managed to split the singles matches with the top team in the NESCAC. Wan’s win was the only match that went to a third set, ending in a 6-4, 5-7, 10-5 victory in the fourth spot.

Despite the impressive singles play, Amherst could not rebound from dropping all three doubles matches. Lerner teamed up with junior Tal Avrahami (Riverdale, NY) to give the fourth-ranked pairing in the nation a great match, but the Jeffs dropped the tight match-up 8-6.

Amherst moves to 11-4 with the loss and will conclude its regular season with a match against Tufts University on Sunday at 1 p.m.
