Jeffs Fall to No. 6 Williams, 7-2April 9 , 2007 SOUTH HADLEY, MA – The Amherst College men’s tennis team had its home match with NESCAC archrival Williams College moved indoors to Mount Holyoke College due to inclement weather. The sixth-ranked Ephs proved to be too much for the 18th-ranked Jeffs, as Williams took home the 7-2 victory. Amherst jumped out to 2-1 lead with some solid play in the doubles matches. Junior Tal Avrahami (Riverdale, NY) and sophomore Zach Lerner (Scarsdale, NY) pulled off an 8-6 victory in the first spot, while juniors Geoff Schwartz (Dallas, TX) and Jeff Wan (Staten Island, NY) edged out their opponents for a very tight 9-8 win. Senior co-captain Karti Subramanian (Bethesda, MD) and junior Mike Mintz (New York, NY) were also involved in a close doubles match, but came out on the losing end, 8-6. Williams took control and swept singles play, with five of the six Ephs needing just two sets to win. Mintz was involved in the closest singles match of the day, winning 6-3 in the second set after dropping the first, but was barely edged in the third set, 7-6 (2). The loss was only the second for Amherst (8-2) this spring, while Williams improves to 6-3 in spring matches. The Lord Jeffs return to action Tuesday for a home match-up with Trinity College at 3 p.m.
