Jeffs Off to Hot Start for 2007 Spring SeasonMarch 23, 2007 POMONA, CA – The Amherst College men’s tennis team has played very well during their California swing this week, picking up impressive wins over California-Lutheran University and 13th-ranked Kalamazoo. Amherst dropped its first match of the spring, 3-6, against Bowdoin College yesterday in a non-conference match-up. After defeating M.I.T. on March 10th, Amherst headed to the west coast to face a tough spring slate. The Lord Jeffs picked up its second consecutive win to start the spring season with a convincing 6-3 victory over California-Lutheran on Monday. Amherst swept the doubles competition against CLU, and picked up wins in the 4-5-6 spots as well. Amherst would need to continue its hot streak when facing 13th-ranked Kalamazoo the following afternoon to pick up a win. Kalamazoo took a 3-0 sweep in the doubles slate, but Amherst would rally back, and take all six singles matches to seal the win. At 3-0, Amherst had won all of their matches by the same 6-3 score. The luck of the 6-3 score would run out on Thursday, as Amherst fell to conference rival Bowdoin by the same score to end the undefeated spring start for the Jeffs. Amherst’s Zack Lerner (Scarsdale, NY) led the Jeffs, as he paired with Tal Avrahami (Riverdale, NY) to win the #2 doubles match, before taking a 6-1, 6-0 win in the top singles match. Amherst will face Chapman on Friday before returning home for the NESCAC season.
