Amherst Men's And Women's Squash Dominate Northeastern

November 29 , 2006

AMHERST, MA – Both the Amherst College men’s and women’s squash teams beat visiting Northeastern University this evening in their season openers in convincing fashion.  The Amherst teams opened their winter slates with the first of their six home matches.

Amherst dominated in the women’s match-up, winning 9-0 and taking the lone exhibition match. The night saw some Amherst regulars win their first 2006-07 season matches, but it also saw four members of the Lord Jeff squad win their first collegiate matches.

Playing in the number-one match-up, senior co-captain Caroline Shannon (Hanover, NH) won her match 3-0 to set the tone for the Jeffs. Following in Shannon’s footsteps were Emily O’Brien (New Canaan, CT), Abby Mantica (Sewickley, PA), and Sarah Harper (Rochester, MN), who swept the two, three and four spots.

Winning their first matches for Amherst were Emery Sweeney (Darien, CT), Laurel LaMontagne (Moraga, CA), Melissa Moulton (Oreland, PA) and Hannah Merves (Merion, PA).

The Amherst men’s team was not to be out-done, winning their dual with Northeastern 9-0 as well. Only the number one seed from Northeastern, Khurram Khan (Islamabad, Pakistan) was able to take a game off of Amherst’s Drew Blacker (Summit, NJ), in what proved to be a very entertaining match. Blacker finished off Khan in four games, 3-1.

The rest of the Lord Jeffs men’s side took their opponents without surrendering a single game. In the eighth slot, Amherst’s Gautam Kalani (Mumbai, India) refused to surrender a single point, winning 9-0, 9-0, 9-0 for his first win of the young season.
