HANOVER, NH – The Amherst College men's and women's squash teams both fell at the hands of national powerhouse Dartmouth College this evening, with the women's team losing 9-0 and the men's side falling 8-1. Sophomore Jerome Giovinazzo (Staten Island, NY) was the lone Lord Jeff to pick up a win on the night, pulling out a victory in the number eight spot.

The Amherst men’s team put in a solid performance against seventh-ranked Dartmouth, with five Jeffs taking at least one game from their respective opponents. Senior co-captain Auloke Mathur (Mumbai, India) dropped the first game to the nation’s 19th-ranked player, Andrew Boumford, but battled back to tie the match at 1-1 and then again at 2-2 before being outmatched in the final game, 9-1.

Sophomore Brian Warner (Atlanta, GA) put in a similar performance to that of Mathur, finding himself notched up at 2-2 after taking the first and fourth games, but was unable to pull out the victory. Junior Mark Rapisarda (Brooklyn, NY) returned to the team after spending his first semester abroad, and put in a solid performance in the third slot. Rapisarda took the first game 10-8, but lost two nail-biting games in a row to fall behind 2-1 before dropping the final game, 9-3.

Giovinazzo put the Lord Jeffs on the board in the eighth slot, comfortably defeating James Crandell 3-1 for Amherst’s lone win of the evening.

The Amherst women’s team was up against some serious competition in the sixth-ranked Dartmouth squad, including one of the country’s top players, Ashley Malenchak, who finished last season ranked 17th in the nation. Senior co-captain Caroline Shannon (Hanover, NH) returned to her hometown, but was unable to pull off the upset in the top spot.

Both Amherst squads return to action Jan. 13 for a home match-up with Brown University, whose women’s team ranks seventh in the nation and men’s team ranks 12th. Match time is set for 3 p.m.
