Jeffs Open Indoor Season at Husky Carnival

December 2, 2006

BOSTON, MA - The Amherst College track teams opened their 2006-07 campaigns at the Husky Classic at the Reggie Lewis Track in Boston, Mass. While there were some athletes who entered the meet fresh from the cross country season, many of the sprinters used the event to measure where they stood before the bulk of the season begins in January.

Standing out for the women’s side were senior tri-captain Shauneen Garrahan (Fairfax Station, VA) and junior Kim Partee (Brentwood, TN), who finished first and second, respectively, in the 5K, with both hitting NCAA provisional marks with times of 17:24 and 17:29, respectively. Finishing close behind and in fourth place was junior Heather Wilson (Danvers, MA) with a time of 18:08.

In other women’s events, senior tri-captain Maria Millard (Orono, ME) grabbed a third-place finish in the 800, as she raced aggressively from the gun and sped to a time of 2:22.77, while in the same heat sophomore Carly Levenson (Richmond, VA) would grab 11th with an opening season time of 2:28.

The 4x400 team comprised of Millard, Levenson and sophomores Jenny Mancino (New York, NY) and Molly Priedeman (Wayzata, MN), who finished in seventh place with a time of 4:13.49. Mancino also grabbed 21st place in the 200 to go along with a 41st-place finish in the 55-yard dash before helping the relay team. Sophomore Kate Silverman (Upper Montclair, NJ) placed 15th and was the first Amherst runner across the line in the 500, with Priedman coming in just a few steps later in 16th and first-year Hoiwan Cheung (Hanover, NH) finishing 20th.

Other first-years making college track debuts were Mary Doris Reggie (Crowley, LA), who would finish 12th in the 1000; Jennifer Rybak (Clifton Park, NY), who posted the top time in the 55 and also ran the 200; Amanda McGinn (Bangor, ME), who doubled up in the 55 and 200; and Mattie Baker (Brighton, IL) and Caroline Darmody (Coral Gables, FL) who competed in the 400, placing 16th and 25th, respectively.

The men were led by sophomore Steve Stewart's (Hartford, CT) 10th-place finish in the 800, and he also anchored the 4x400 relay to a 10th-place finish. Junior Romulo Cabeza (Enfield, CT) had a solid day, not to mention a busy one, as he placed first for the team in both the mile-run and 1000-meter run. First-year runners Kit Callahan (Evanston, IL) and Ben Klein (Montclair, NJ) doubled up in those events as well, with Klein winning his section of the mile.

Sophomore Thomas Foote (Newton, MA) made his track debut, as he joined the track team for the winter before he will return to the lacrosse team, and looked strong in the 800 as he ran 2:03. First-year Keith Pendergrass (Greenwich, NY), in addition to his strong leadoff leg in the relay, also made his college debut in the 500 as he ran a strong race to crack 70 seconds. Senior Geoff Stricsek (Harrison City, PA) and junior co-captain Steve Shashy (McLean, VA) went head-to-head in the 200 and the 400, with each of them out-dueling the other one time, before then working together in the 4x400 B relay.

The Lord Jeffs do not return to action until January 13, 2007 when they travel to Tufts University for the first of two Tufts Invites.
