Garrahan Wins 10k; Amherst in First Place After Day One of NCAA Championships
From a UW-Oshkosh Release
May 25, 2007
OSHKOSH, WI – Amherst College got off to a strong start at the 2007 Track and Field Championships, as senior tri-captain Shauneen Garrahan (Fairfax Station, VA) led her team with a first-place finish in the 10,000-Meter Run to place the Lord Jeffs atop the leader board after the first day of competition. Events resume Friday and will conclude Saturday afternoon.
Garrahan has been no stranger to winning this season, and is showing no signs of slowing down. Her time of 34 minutes and 48.19 seconds not only gave her a first-place finish, but also set a new record for J.J. Keller Field. The 10k marked the final event of Thursday and the first of four events for Garrahan, as she will take part in the 3,000-Meter Steeplechase Friday night and the 1,500-Meter Run and 5,000-Meter Run Saturday afternoon.
Garrahan’s title marked the third time since 2004 that an Amherst athlete stood atop the awards stand at nationals in the 10k.
Also taking part in the 10k for Amherst were junior Heather Wilson (Danvers, MA) and sophomore Elise Tropiano (Plainview, NY), who finished sixth (35:59.11) and seventh (36:03.56), respectively, to give the Jeffs five more team points. The two will join Garrahan in the 5k on Saturday, while Tropiano will join her in the Steeplechase Friday night.
