Amherst Takes Home Three Individual Victories at DIII New England Championships

SPRINGFIELD, MA – The Amherst College track and field teams continued their championship competition with a trip to the Division III New England Championships at Springfield College. The Amherst men placed 11th, while the women’s side finished fifth. Williams College came out victorious on both the men’s and women’s sides.
The Lord Jeffs took home three victories on the day. On the men’s side, first-year Dan Murner (Crestwood, KY) put in a solid time of 32 minutes and 19.71 seconds in the 10,000-Meter Run, while senior Nate Freese (Tunbridge, VT) won the 5,000-Meter Run with a time of 14:56.5. Murner and Freese accounted for 20 of the 25 points awarded to the Amherst men’s team.
Also receiving points for Amherst was first-year Carlyle Eubank (Santa Ynez, CA), who finished sixth in the 5k, and the Jeffs’ 4x400 relay team of junior Basile Beaty (Belmont, MA), sophomores Steve Stewart (Hartford, CT) and Jack Kiley (Garden City, NY) and first-year Kit Callahan (Evanston, IL), who placed seventh. Junior Mike Harbus (New York, NY) and senior Rob Boley (Mount Pleasant, MI) took home ninth-place finishes in the 5k and the 3,000-Meter Steeplechase, respectively.
On the women’s side, senior tri-captain Shauneen Garrahan (Fairfax Station, VA) continued her impressive 2007 campaign by setting a New England Division III record in the 10k, posting a time of 35:40.41 that shattered the previous record of 36:27.96. Also excelling in the 10k was sophomore Elise Tropiano (Plainview, NY), who finished just nine seconds behind Garrahan for an impressive second-place finish.
Tropiano also finished sixth in the 1,500-Meter Run, while junior Heather Wilson (Danvers, MA) placed 14th before picking up a fourth-place finish in the 5k. Also seeing success in the 5k were first-year Sophie Galleher (Denver, CO) and sophomore Nicole Anderson (Kailua, HI), who finished sixth and eighth, respectively.
Senior tri-captain Maria Millard (Orono, ME) took home a third-place finish in the 400-Meter Hurdles, while sophomore Kate Silverman (Upper Montclair, NJ) came in 11th. Sophomore Caitlin McDermott-Murphy (Newton, MA) added another top-five finish to the Jeffs’ day, coming in fourth in the 800-Meter Run.
Rounding out the top-10 finishes for the Amherst women were juniors Laura Mortimer (Jackson, MS) and Katie Moravec (Chico, CA), along with senior tri-captain Hannah Campbell (Haverstraw, NY), who finished seventh in the 10k, eighth in the Steeplechase and 10th in the 400-Meter Dash, respectively.
The Amherst women’s relay teams had a solid day, as they finished third, fifth and 12th in the 4x800, 4x400 and 4x100 events, respectively.
The Lord Jeffs return to action Friday, May 11 for the Open New England Championships.
