Three Amherst Women Compete at Penn Relays
April 26, 2007
PHILADELPHIA, PA – Three members of the Amherst College women’s outdoor track and field team made the trip to the Penn Relays to compete in the distance event portion of the Relay Meet on Thursday. Senior tri-captain Shauneen Garrahan (Fairfax Station, VA), junior Heather Wilson (Danvers, MA) and sophomore Elise Tropiano (Plainview, NY) represented the Lord Jeffs, and each ran to a new personal record in their respective event.
Already with an NCAA Auto qualifying mark in the Steeplechase, Garrahan was looking to improve on her best time and post a time that would qualify for the USATF National Championships. Running in a combined Olympic Development and Collegiate Championship section, she more than held her own and finished third overall as the collegiate runner-up. Garrahan finished in 10 minutes and 17 seconds, well under the B Standard for the USATF Nationals and good enough for a new personal record.
Tropiano just missed the NCAA Auto qualifying mark in the Olympic Development section of the 5,000, but still ran to a new personal record and posted a solid provisional qualifying mark for the national championships. Wilson finished the night off for Amherst by running in the 10,000, which was a combination of the Collegiate Championships and the Olympic Development races. She finished in 35:41, good enough for a new personal record by more than one minute and an NCAA Auto qualifying mark.
