Jeffs Compete in Little Three ChampionshipsApril 23, 2007 WILLIAMSTOWN, MA - The Amherst College track and field teams began their championship seasons on Saturday by competing in the Little Three Championships on a beautiful spring afternoon at Williams College. The Williams men took the victory over Wesleyan University and the Lord Jeffs by a margin of 172.5 to 109 to 86.5, while the Williams women finished 66.5 points ahead of second-place Amherst and 108.5 points ahead of Wesleyan. All three teams had strong performances on the day, and got themselves in good shape for the next month of championship meets. On the women’s side, the Jeffs were led by senior tri-captains Shauneen Garrahan (Fairfax Station, VA) and Maria Millard (Orono, ME). Garrahan ran to a new meet record and automatic NCAA mark in the 5000, while Millard picked up a win in the 400 Hurdles, just missing the meet record. Closing out the day in winning fashion was the 4x400 relay team of Millard, sophomores Caitlin McDermott-Murphy (Newton, MA) and Carly Levenson (Richmond, VA) and senior tri-captain Hannah Campbell (Haverstraw, NY). First-year Jennifer Rybak (Clifton Park, NY) used her multi event talents to full effect as she was in numerous events throughout the day, helping the team score points in the hurdles, jumps and throws. Sophomore Elise Tropiano (Plainview, NY) and junior Heather Wilson (Danvers, MA) dropped down to the 1500 for a tune-up and finished 2-3, with sophomore Zandra Walton (Skaneateles, NY) and junior Meg Ray (Menands, NY) coming in shortly after them. Wilson came back later to finish 2nd in the 5K, while first-year Sophie Galleher (Denver, CO) and junior Katie Moravec (Chico, CA) finished 2-3 in the steeplechase in their first attempts in the event this season. McDermott-Murphy finished 3rd in the 800 with her best mark of the season before helping the relay team to victory. The Lord Jeffs return to action Tuesday for a home meet with Trinity and Keene State colleges at 4:45 p.m. |
