Jeffs Compete in Wesleyan Invite over Weekend

January 27, 2007

MIDDLETOWN, CT - Due to a portion of the Amherst College track and field team competing in Boston University for the Terrier Classic, and also the extensive work the squad has been doing in preparation for the championships, the Jeffs did not have the results they were hoping for at the Wesleyan University Invite. With the students returning to classes and single practice sessions, the team should be fresh and ready to head into the final two regular meets before the championships get under way.

Despite the fatigue, some solid performances were achieved. The women were led by a third-place finish in the 5000 from sophomore Liz Dalton (Wayne, PA), who solidly got under the Division III standard, while the 4x400 team of sophomores Carly Levenson (Richmond, VA) and Molly Priedman (Wayzata, MN) and first-years Mary Doris Reggie (Crowley, LA) and Jennifer Rybak (Clifton Park, NY) also finished 3rd. Levenson, Priedman and Reggie finished 4th, 6th and 7th, respectively, in the 500 earlier in the day, while Rybak was busy in the hurdles and jumps.

Sophomore Mattie Baker (Brighton, IL) ran a fast 55m and also posted a surprisingly quick time in the 200. Senior tri-captain Hannah Campbell (Haverstraw, NY) continues to drop her times in the 400, as she has been lowering them by nearly two seconds per race. Junior Laura Mortimer (Jackson, MS) finished 7th in the mile, doubling back in the 1000 with an 8th-place finish, while junior Katie Moravec (Chico, CA) did the same double, finishing 13th and 8th in the two sections, respectively.

The men were led by a runner-up finish by sophomore Peter Foote (Shelburne, VT) in the 3000, where he ran well under his previous best time, as well as 5th- and 9th-place showings, respectively, by senior Rich Wilson (Columbus, OH) and sophomore Joe Addison (Midlothian, VA) in the same race. The team got 3rd-place finishes from senior Rob Boley (Mount Pleasant, MI) in the 5k and senior tri-captain Sam Hayman (Evanston, IL) in the 1000.

First-year Thomas Anderson (Birmingham, AL) had the top time in the mile for the team and followed up with a solid lead-off leg in the distance medley relay, as he helped sophomore Steve Stewart (Hartford, CT) and first-years Kit Callahan (Evanston, IL) and Steve Grigelevich (Cumberland, RI) finish 6th. Sophomore Thomas Foote (Newton, MA) posted an 11th-place finish in the 800, just in front of junior Basile Beaty (Belmont, MA) and senior Eric Glustrom (Boulder, CO), who finished 12th and 14th, respectively.

The full Amherst squad returns to action Feb. 3 for the third Tufts Invitational of the season.
