January 13, 2007
MEDFORD, MA – The Amherst College indoor track team returned to action for the first time since Dec. 2, as the Lord Jeffs participated in the first of three Tufts Invitationals. The meet was a non-scoring meet, and was viewed as more of a workout than as a competition, but Amherst still put in some notable performances.
Senior tri-captain Maria Millard (Orono, ME) led the women’s team by finishing 2nd in the 800 and anchoring the 4x800 relay team to the Amherst women’s lone victory of the day. Sophomore Caitlin Murphy (Newton, MA) finished 3rd in the 3k before running a strong 1000 and anchoring the 4x400 team to a sixth-place finish.
Sophomores Carly Levenson (Richmond, VA), Molly Priedeman (Wayzata, MN) and Kate Silverman (Upper Montclair, NJ) finished 3rd, 6th and 7th, respectively, in the 400m. First-year Cami Farkus (Cambridge, MA) made her track debut and was the team's first finisher in the 200 and just missed making the finals in the dash, where senior tri-captain Hannah Campbell (Haverstraw, NY) would place 12th.
First-year Jennifer Rybak (Clifton Park, NY) finished 7th in the long jump, as both she and Millard made the finals. First-year Mary Doris Reggie (Crowley, LA) grabbed 10th place in the 600, while senior Lauren Benson (Hamilton, NJ) won her section of the mile.
Senior tri-captain John Babbott (Ojai, CA) knocked over 20 seconds off of his best time in the 5000, as he easily outdistanced the field to take the lone victory on the day for the men. Carlyle Eubank (Santa Ynez, CA) led a s strong group of first-years in the 3k, as he placed 4th and was well under 9:00, while Will Bell (Silver Spring, MD) and Jimmy Swanson (New Orleans, LA) posted solid times in 12th and 17th place, respectively. The three would come back later in the 1000 and finish 8th (Bell), 9th (Swanson) and 12th (Eubank).
Keith Pendergrass placed 8th in the 400, nearly winning his section, before joining up with first-year Kit Callahan (Evanston, IL) and sophomores Thomas Foote (Newton, MA) and Steve Stewart (Hartford, CT) to place 3rd in the 4x400 relay. The 4x800 relay of sophomore Jack Kiley (Garden City, NY), Bell, Swanson and Eubank finished 3rd as well.
Junior Rom Cabeza (Enfield, CT) and Callahan were the team's first two finishers in both the 800 and mile, where they placed 8th and 9th, respectively, in the 800 and 9th and 13th, respectively, in the mile.
