December 2, 2006
AMHERST, MA- The Amherst College men's hockey team exploded for seven goals and routed visiting non-conference opponent St. Michael's College 7-1 on Saturday afternoon. The Jeffs improve to 5-0-1 while the Purple Knights fall to 1-4.
St. Michael's grabbed an early lead just 15 seconds into play when Tim Dancey smashed a one-timer past Amherst senior goaltender Josh Fillman (Charlestown, MA). The Jeffs responded when junior forward Andrew Schremp (Denver, CO) scored the first of his two goals on the afternoon. Amherst snagged the lead with three minutes remaining in the opening period when sophomore defenseman Jeff Landers (Jasper, AL) sent a low slap-shot past Purple Knights goalie Erik Smith.
The second session saw Schremp tally his second of the day when a Brandon Zangel (Highlands Ranch, CO) wrist shot popped over the goalies head before Schremp tucked it into the open net.
The third period was all Jeffs who exploded for four goals. Sophomore forward Olufemi Amurawaiye (Whitby, ON) scored for the fourth consecutive game. Senior captain Sean Ellis (Springfield, MA) notched consecutive tallies giving him four on the weekend before senior forward Erik Lund (Edina, MN) tucked home a late goal for the Jeffs.
Sophomore forward Joel Covelli (Carlisle, ON) tallied three assists giving him a conference leading 12 on the season. Amherst was dominating on special teams going 4-for-5 on the power-play and killing off all six Purple Knight man advantages.
Fillman finished with 19 saves for Amherst while Smith made 35 stops for St. Michaels.
Amherst returns to action next Saturday night when they welcome non-conference foe Fitchburg State at 7 p.m.
