From a Wesleyan Release

MIDDLETOWN, CT – The Amherst College men’s hockey team won its season opener in come-from-behind fashion, defeating Wesleyan University 5-4 in a NESCAC match-up.  Junior Gregg Adamo (Manalapan, NJ) scored twice for the Lord Jeffs during a five-minute Wesleyan penalty in the later stages of the third period to lead Amherst to a 5-4 come-from-behind win.

Wesleyan jumped ahead 2-0 in the first period only to be tied by Amherst, 2-2, midway through the second stanza.  Wesleyan again gained the lead, 3-2, at 12:49 of the second but Amherst forged a 3-3 tie 34 seconds later as the teams went into the third period deadlocked.
A major penalty on Wesleyan for hitting from behind at 10:46 of the third period gave Amherst a five-minute man-advantage and Adamo got the go-ahead goal one minute later as he tipped the puck through the pads of Wesleyan goalie, senior Dave Scardella.  At 14:09, Adamo received a centering pass from junior Kyle Schoppel (Cambridge, ON) from the left side and fired a quick slapshot from the slot for what proved to be the game-winner.  Schoppel finished with four assists while sophomore Joel Covelli (Carlisle, ON) had a goal and four assists to get in on all five Lord Jeff tallies.  Senior Sean Ellis (Springfield, MA) added two goals for Amherst.

Wesleyan got two goals and an assist from first-year David Layne while fellow first-year Jeff Back had a goal and two assists. Wesleyan hosts Hamilton on Saturday while Amherst visits Trinity to complete the NESCAC weekend.
