From a New England College Release
February 9, 2007
HENNIKER, NH – The Amherst College men’s hockey team dropped its third straight game, falling to New England College 6-2 on the road. Junior forward Mike Mullen scored three goals and assisted another to lead the Pilgrims past the Jeffs, as New England improves to 12-9-1 (10-5-1 ECAC East) and Amherst drops to 12-7-1 (9-6-1 NESCAC/ECAC East).
The Pilgrims would start the scoring early, with Mullen benefiting from a two-man advantage and scoring a power-play goal just four minutes into the opening period. Amherst’s Brandon Zangel (Highlands Ranch, CO) would answer with a power-play goal of his own just five minutes later to tie the game at 1-1. NEC would go on to score three unanswered goals in the final eight minutes of the period to head into the first intermission up 4-1.
Amherst would quickly cut the Pilgrim lead to two with Gregg Adamo (Manalapan, NJ) scoring his sixth goal of the season just 15 seconds into the period. The two teams would settle down as the Pilgrims were able to shut down three Amherst power-play opportunities and hold on to the 4-2 lead heading into the final period. In the third period the Lord Jeffs would out-shoot the Pilgrims 9-8, but NEC would tack on two goals and skate away with the 6-2 victory.
Picking up the win in goal for New England College was Ron Baia, who finished with 24 saves. In goal for Amherst College was senior Josh Fillman (Charlestown, MA), who stopped 29 Pilgrim shots on goal.
The Lord Jeffs return to action Saturday for an ECAC East match-up at Saint Anselm College. Game time is set for 3 p.m.
