Amherst, MA – The Amherst College men’s hockey team suffered a defeat at the hands of 14th ranked NESCAC rival Bowdoin College 5-1 on Friday night. With the loss, the 10th ranked Jeffs drop to 12-5-1 (9-5-1 NESCAC) on the season while the Polar Bears improve to 11-4-3 (8-4-2).
Amherst opened the scoring six-minutes into the second period when senior defenseman Brandon Zangel (Highlands Ranch, CO) took a perfect cross-ice pass from junior forward Mike McIntosh (Soldotna, AK) and tucked it home top corner. That was all the offense Amherst mustered. Bowdoin scored five unanswered to end the game beginning with Ryan Blossom’s wrap-around backhander with four minutes to play in the second session. Bowdoin seized the lead for good on the power-play when Mike Westerman banged home a deflection off the boards into the top corner.
The third period was all Polar Bears as Colin Hughes, Westerman and Mike Corbelle each found the net to pull Bowdoin within a game of the Jeffs for first place in the NESCAC.
Bowdoin netminder Chris Rossi made 31 stops while Amherst senior goaltender Josh Fillman (Charlestown, MA) made 31 saves as well.
