AMHERST, MA – Amherst College sophomore forward Joel Covelli (Carlisle, Ontario) was named the NESCAC Player of the Week for men’s hockey after leading his team to two conference victories this past week. Covelli is the first member of this year’s squad to earn Player of the Week honors.
Amherst overcame an early 1-0 deficit in Friday’s 2-1 win at Conn. College, with Covelli picking up an assist on the game-winning goal in the third period. The Jeffs followed up with a 5-2 win at Tufts University Saturday, as Covelli scored the first goal of the game and assisted on two others.
Through the first 17 games of the season, Amherst sits atop the NESCAC standings at 9-3-1 with an overall record of 12-4-1. Covelli leads his team and the conference in assists (22) and is tied for the lead in points (28), while the Jeffs match Colby College for the best scoring offense in the NESCAC (4.24 gpg).
The Lord Jeffs return to action Friday for a home match-up with Bowdoin College. Game time is set for 7 p.m.
