Jeffs Edge Conn. College 2-1 for Road Win
From a Conn. College Release
January 26, 2007
NEW LONDON, CT – The Amherst College men’s hockey team stayed true to their #12 national ranking this evening when they edged NESCAC and ECAC East foe Conn. College 2-1 for a road win. The win moves Amherst to 11-4-1 (8-3-1) on the year, while dropping the Camels to 6-10-1 (5-7) for the season.
Conn. College struck first blood in the opening period when Ryan Howarth (Grand Blanc, MI) scored a power-play goal just five minutes into the game. Walt Wright (Davidsonville, MD) recorded the assist for the Camels, on what would be their lone goal of the game.
Amherst drew even on a first period power-play goal of its own when sophomore defender Rylan Burns (Jasper, AB) banged home the equalizer just seven minutes later. Senior Brandon Zangel (Highlands Ranch, CO) and Burns’ classmate Brendan Powers (Walpole, MA) registered the assists.
The second period was very evenly matched, as neither team could find a go-ahead goal in the middle frame. This third of the game was the only period in which both Amherst goaltender Josh Fillman (Charlestown, MA) and Conn.’s Greg Parker (Tenton, Ont.) would post shutouts. Fillman turned away 23 Camel shots in the game, while Parker would turn away the same number of Jeff attempts.
Amherst would need only 5:50 of the third period before they found the eventual game-winning goal off the stick of sophomore defender Jeff Landers (Hanover, MA). Amherst big guns, points-leader Joel Covelli (Carlisle, ON) and senior captain Sean Ellis (Springfield, MA) set-up the game winner for their only points of the night.
Amherst returns to action tomorrow afternoon when they face Tufts University on the road. The puck is set to drop in Medford, MA at 4 p.m.BOX SCORE
