From a Salem State Release
SALEM, MA – The Amherst College men’s hockey team pulled off a 2-1 conference victory over Salem State College after first-year defenseman Andrew Stevenson (Newton, MA) netted his first collegiate goal just 1:06 into overtime to improve the Lord Jeffs to 9-2-1 (6-1-1 NESCAC/ECAC East) on the season.
Salem State first-year Aaron Blades put the Vikings ahead 1-0 at 11:37 of the first period after roofing a Zach Doyen feed from the top of the left face-off dot. Amherst knotted the score at 1-1 after senior Brandon Zangel (Highlands Ranch, CO) provided a power play lamplighter from the slot at 14:26 of the middle stanza, with junior forward Michael McIntosh (Soldotna, AK) and sophomore defenseman Rylan Burns (Mill Bay, BC) picking up the assists.
Just over one minute into the sudden death period, Stevenson scored off a goalmouth scramble to propel the Jeffs to the win, with senior captain Sean Ellis (Springfield, MA) and sophomore Joel Covelli (Carlisle, ON) picking up assists.
The Amherst penalty-killing lines came up huge for the Jeffs, as they held the Vikings scoreless on their four power play opportunities
Salem State sophomore goaltender Ryan Hatch made 32 saves on the night, while Amherst senior netminder Josh Fillman (Charlestown, MA) stopped 38 shots to pick up the victory.
The Lord Jeffs return to action Saturday for an ECAC East match-up with the University of Southern Maine at 3 p.m.
