Amherst's Walters Named NESCAC Player of the Week
January 15, 2007
AMHERST, MA – Amherst junior forward Fletcher Walters (Ann Arbor, MI) was named the New England Small College Athletic Conference (NESCAC) men’s basketball Player of the Week this afternoon for his hand in two Lord Jeff wins this week. Walters made his impact felt off the bench in wins over M.I.T and previously unbeaten Brandeis University.
Despite coming off the bench for Amherst in both contests, Walters was Lord Jeffs’ leading scorer in just 19.0 minutes of play per game. In Thursday night’s win at M.I.T., Walters racked up a dozen points and grabbed five rebounds, before pouring in a team-high 16 points and six boards in the win over 9-0 Brandeis.
Walters ended the week shooting 8-for-15 (533) from the floor, including 4-for-6 (.667) from behind the arc, while pulling in 5.5 rebounds-per-game. He also had two blocks in the wins.
The Player of the Week nod marks the first time Walters has received accolades from the conference, and it is also the first time this season that both the Amherst men’s and women’s teams received the honor the same week. Classmate Stefanie Reiff (Hinsdale, IL) grabbed co-Player of the Week honors for the Amherst women’s team today as well.
Walters and the Lord Jeffs return to action tomorrow evening when they travel to Worcester State at 7:00 p.m.
