Four Jeffs Score in Double Figures to Lift Amherst Past MIT, 79-47

December 7, 2006

CAMBRIDGE, MA – Thirteen members of the Amherst College men’s basketball team had a hand in the scoring Thursday night against the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, with four of the Lord Jeffs finishing in double figures. With the win, Amherst improves to 6-0 and prepares for a match-up with undefeated Brandeis University (9-0) Saturday afternoon at LeFrak Gymnasium.

Amherst had spread out its offense through the first five games of the young 2006-07 season, letting several players put in significant playing time, and tonight’s game was no exception. By night’s end, juniors Andrew Olson (San Diego, CA) and Fletcher Walters (Ann Arbor, MI) and senior quad-captain Tim McLaughlin (Chatham, NJ) had each totaled 12 points, while sophomore Brian Baskauskas (Palo Alto, CA) led Amherst with 13 points. Olson also added four assists, Walters added five rebounds, and Baskauskas added a pair of steals, while senior quad-captain Dan O’Shea (Lawrence, MA) pulled down nine rebounds.

Sophomore Jimmy Bartolotta (Littleton, CO) and first-year Erich Bracht (Highlands Ranch, CO) played solid games for the Engineers, totaling 16 and 14 points, respectively, with each player adding nine rebounds. MIT falls to 4-5 on the season and returns to action Tuesday to take on Emerson College at home.

Through the first six games, the Lord Jeffs have defeated their opponents by an average of 35.8 points per game, proving to have numerous weapons on offense. The Jeffs’ field goal percentage stands at an impressive 0.552%, with their three-point field goal percentage not far behind at 0.475%. Amherst’s defense has been just as impressive, holding opponents to a field goal percentage of 0.342% and just 0.243% from behind the arc.

The Lord Jeffs return to action this Saturday for a highly-anticipated home match-up with Brandeis. Tip-off is set for 3 p.m.
