Amherst and Thomas College Win Season Openers at Ken Wright '52 Invitational
November 17, 2006
AMHERST, MA – The Amherst College and Thomas College men’s basketball teams opened their seasons with victories in the Ken Wright ’52 Memorial Invitational Friday night, upending New York City College of Technology and Polytechnic University, respectively. Amherst and Thomas will face each other in the championship game tomorrow at 3 p.m., and Polytechnic and NYCCT will play in the consolation game at 1 p.m.
The Lord Jeffs dominated the Yellow Jackets of NYCCT, winning their first game of the season 101-66. Thirteen Amherst players scored in the game, led by junior Adolphe Coulibaly (Abidjan, Ivory Coast), who finished the day with 16 points on 6-of-7 shooting, including knocking down all four of his three-point attempts. Junior Fletcher Walters (Ann Arbor, MI) added 12 points on 5-of-7 shooting.
The Yellow Jackets had four players score in double-digits. Leading the way were Issaka Yaya (Bronx, NY) and Jamaal Hall (Brooklyn, NY), who finished with 19 and 17 points, respectively. The small NYCCT team could not seem to find a solution for the much larger Amherst team, as the Jeffs were able to score with a well-balanced offense.
In the second game, the Thomas College Terriers edged out the Fighting Blue Jays of Polytechnic University, 58-55. Four Thomas players scored in double figures, led by sophomore Aecio Madeira (Shea High, RI) with 14 points. The Fighting Blue Jays, led by junior Tyree Williams (Philadelphia, PA) with 18 points, came from behind late in the game, but couldn’t get a last-second shot off in time, dropping their season-opener in what turned out to be a very close game.
