AMHERST, MA – Amherst College sophomore Brian Baskauskas (Palo Alto, CA) was named the New England Small College Athletic Conference (NESCAC) Player of the Week for leading the Lord Jeffs to three significant victories this past week.
After being forced into a starting role, Baskauskas had to step up to the challenge for the past three games. In the three games, Baskauskas averaged 17.3 points, 5.7 rebounds, 1.3 assists and 2.3 steals, while shooting 66% (19-29) from the field, including 54% (7-13) from beyond the arc.
The biggest performance of the week came at Tufts University, when Baskauskas exploded for career highs in points (25) and rebounds (11) on 10-of-12 shooting to lead Amherst to a 96-92 overtime victory. The Jeffs trailed by six points at halftime and by as many as 13 in the second half, but the 6’6” guard/forward got better as the game went on, scoring 12 points in the second frame, including the final two points of regulation that sent the game into overtime. In the extra frame, Baskauskas scored six of Amherst’s 14 points.
Baskauskas concluded his impressive week by playing a solid all-around game against twelfth-ranked Bates College, totaling 16 points, four rebounds, three steals and a pair of blocks to help lead Amherst to another key conference victory.
This marks the first time Baskauskas has received the Player of the Week honor, and the second time a member of the Amherst team has received it this season.
Amherst returns to action Tuesday for a non-conference match-up with Elms College at 7:30 p.m.
