MIDDLETOWN, CT – The Amherst College men’s basketball team used two 18-point runs in the second half to move past Little Three rival Wesleyan University and improve to 12-0 on the season. The Lord Jeffs led by just two points two minutes into the second half, but were ahead 55-35 less than four minutes later. Wesleyan (4-8) was never able to get back in the game, as Amherst finished with the 76-52 non-conference victory.
Wesleyan led the unbeaten Jeffs 12-11 after the first six-and-a-half minutes of play and would battle back-and-forth for the majority of the half, trailing 28-26 with 4:11 remaining in the opening frame. Amherst jumped out to its largest lead of the half when sophomore Brian Baskauskas (Palo Alto, CA) knocked down a three-pointer with just under two minutes remaining, putting his team ahead by nine points, 35-26. The Cardinals cut the lead to four points when Jeremy Kaminer hit a three-pointer with 10 seconds remaining, but junior point guard Andrew Olson (San Diego, CA) closed out the half with a jumper to bring the lead to six.
With 17:26 remaining in the second half and the Jeffs leading 37-35, senior quad-captain Tim McLaughlin (Chatham, NJ) knocked down a three-pointer to begin an Amherst onslaught. During the next 2:45, the Jeffs hit all six of their field goal attempts, five of which came from behind the arc, as Amherst blind-sided the Cardinals to take a 55-35 lead. The only shot that was not a three-pointer during that span was a jumper by Olson, which he turned into a three-point play after converting on his free-throw shot.
Wesleyan would pull within eight points at the 7:12 mark, but only to be countered by another 18-point run by the Jeffs. During the second run, the Jeffs connected on eight of 10 field goal attempts while holding the Cardinals to just seven shots, none of which they could turn into points. Wesleyan scored only two points in the final 7:12 on a tip-in with 13 seconds remaining in the game.
Senior quad-captain Dan Wheeler (Bloomington, MN) led all scorers with 20 points, while adding a game-high eight rebounds. Olson added 13 points and six assists, Baskauskas chipped in with 11 points, junior Fletcher Walters (Ann Arbor, MI) totaled 11 points and six rebounds, and junior Brandon Jones (Hopatcong, NJ) tied his career high by finishing with 10 points.
Sean Collins led the Cardinals with 14 points, adding six rebounds and a pair of assists. The Jeffs held the Cardinals’ field goal percentage to just 27.6% in the second half and caused 24 turnovers in the game.
The Lord Jeffs return to action this Friday for their first conference game of the season, taking on Tufts University on the road at 7 p.m.BOX SCORE
