AMHERST, MA – The NESCAC announced today the members of the 2007 Baseball All-Conference Team. Three members of the Amherst college squad received a spot on the Second Team, marking the first All-NESCAC selection in each of their careers at Amherst.

Sophomore third baseman Brendan Powers (Walpole, MA) started in all 34 of Amherst’s games this season, finishing in the top three among Amherst players in several offensive categories, including batting average (.348; 3rd), slugging percentage (.526; 2nd), on-base percentage (.412; 3rd), runs scored (31; 3rd), hits (47; 1st), RBIs (30; 2nd) and home runs (5; 2nd). Powers was also able to hit in the clutch, as 12 of his 30 RBIs came with two outs.

Senior Tom Scott (Randolph, NJ) earned a Second Team nod as a consistent outfielder, as he started in all 34 of Amherst’s games as well and committed only three errors for a fielding percentage of .959. Scott was also among Amherst’s leaders in nearly every offensive category, including batting average (.361; 2nd), on-base percentage (.465; 1st), runs scored (32; 1st), hits (43; 3rd) and triples (2; 1st). Scott had a knack for getting hit by pitches, as he led the NESCAC by far with 14 HBPs, as well as a knack for stealing bases, as he led Amherst with nine.

Junior Neal Allar (Floyds Knobs, IN) spent time as a catcher, first baseman and designated hitter for Amherst, and also started in all 34 games this season. Allar led Amherst in batting average (.371), slugging percentage (.597), home runs (6) and sacrifice flies (3), while his 43 RBIs led the team and the NESCAC. The NESCAC recognized Allar earlier this season, when a hot hitting streak earned him Player of the Week honors.

Allar was also recognized by the New England Intercollegiate Baseball Association (NEIBA) today, as 49 players from 22 teams were named to the 2007 NEIBA All-New England First, Second and Third teams. Only nine players from the NESCAC were named to an All-New England team, while only three players from the NESCAC West received the honor. Allar was the lone DH to be named to the Second Team.
